Follow the Clear Skin Rules to Get Healthy, Clear Skin
Part of our proven acne strategy is to teach clients The Acne Lab’s Clear Skin Rules. Following these rules is essential to not only getting clear skin, but for maintaining it.
If you break or bend any of these rules while trying to get clear skin, you will find that it’s hard to get the results you want.
The Acne Lab’s Clear Skin Rules
- Avoid pore cloggers: Avoid products with pore-clogging ingredients
- Switch makeup: Only use pure loose mineral makeup (we like Priia)
- Build consistent habits: Follow skincare routine 2x a day to cleanse, hydrate and protect skin
- Address and prevent acne: Add skincare products that clear acne
- Maintain your skincare and habits for life: Skincare doesn’t stop when your acne clears.

Clear Skin Rule #1:
Avoid Pore Cloggers
Acne is a genetically-inherited skin type where hair follicles shed more skin cells than the hair follicle can get rid of. Over time, the hair follicle builds up a plaque of sticky skin that eventually blocks the pore, traps bacteria, and creates a pimple.
When you use skincare products that have pore-clogging ingredients, it can make matters worse. Pore cloggers mix with your skin's natural oils, contributing to the formation of a plug–that becomes visible as pimples and blackheads.
There are A LOT of skincare products on the market, including acne products, that have pore cloggers in them.
If you have acne-prone skin, you will ALWAYS need to avoid any products with pore-clogging ingredients.
All products in The Acne Lab’s store are free of pore cloggers. If you want to check your other products for pore-clogging ingredients, use our Pore Clogger Checker.
Clear Skin Rule #2:
Switch Your Makeup
If you have acne-prone skin, and if you want to wear makeup, you must switch to using only proven acne-safe makeup. Pure loose minerals is the only makeup that is 100% safe for acne.
Why? Because pure loose mineral makeup contains only minerals without a bunch of extra ingredients. It is considered 100% safe for acne because it doesn’t harbor bacteria, sits on top of your skin instead of absorbing into it, and doesn’t clog pores.
We know it can be hard to switch makeup. But, pure loose mineral makeup provides great coverage, looks natural without caking or flaking, and can give skin a luminous glow.
There are many brands of pure loose mineral makeup out there, but we recommend our clients use the brand Priia.
We like Priia because they are the only company where every one of their products is safe for acne, including their high-coverage Velvet Foundation.

Clear Skin Rule #3:
Build Consistent Habits
We consider building consistent habits foundational to getting and maintaining clear skin.
You must make it a habit to do your recommended skincare routine each morning AND night.
For new clients, we recommend a personalized 2x/day skincare routine we call Skincare 101 that is designed to gently cleanse, hydrate, and protect skin. For tips on how to care for your skin, watch our Skincare 101 video tutorials.
As you progress through our program, we add products with more active ingredients with their own schedule. Some products you may only use a few times a week or at night, for example.
After you graduate from our clear skin program, we’ll recommend a routine for you to continue to maintain your clear skin.
Clear Skins Rule #4:
Address & Prevent Acne
We start all clients on a personalized Skincare 101 routine to prep their skin for the next step: addressing and preventing acne.
In this stage, we introduce products with active acne-fighting ingredients. Our recommendations may vary based on your skin type and acne type. We slowly introduce these acne skincare products, and then make adjustments as your skin adapts.
It’s much like how someone trying to get into good physical shape will adjust and adapt their exercise routine as they get fit. Skincare is the same—it must be adjusted over time to achieve and maintain clear “fit” skin.
Clear Skins Rule #5:
Maintain Your Skincare and Habits for Life
Acne is a genetic disorder with no cure. So, if you are acne prone, you will likely be acne prone your entire life.
Skincare doesn’t stop when your acne clears. You will need to continue to follow these Clear Skin Rules and maintain your skincare routine and habits, even after you attain clear skin.
If you’re acne prone, you’ll likely find you can’t just use the same products forever and maintain clear skin. Acne adapts, so even after you graduate from our clear skin program, you may have to change your products at times to adjust for adaptation.
Remember that we are here to support you and offer acne skincare tune-ups and facials to help keep your skin clear.
