Testimonials
Carissa C.“I love the Acne Lab so much! After getting off hormonal birth control, I was experiencing my first breakouts ever on my face and on my back. I tried seeing multiple dermatologists and nothing was working, and some prescriptions were making my skin worse.
Leanne and the entire team was so helpful in explaining the process, educating me on all the different factors of acne, and creating a custom plan for me. I live in Denver so it was a bit of a drive but SO worth it. Forever grateful to The Acne Lab!”

What Causes Adult Acne?
The only cause of acne is GENETICS. But, there are many factors that INFLUENCE acne (see below).
If you’ve never had acne before or it has made an unwelcome return, it’s likely you have the genetic condition and an influence has triggered your adult acne.
Acne is genetic, so it can’t be cured. However, using The Acne Lab’s proven skin care strategy, you CAN achieve clear skin.

What Influences Acne?
Hormones
Women in particular have an ever-changing landscape of micro and macro changes in hormones.
Macro changes happen during the various “seasons” of our lives. Adolescence, pregnancy, postpartum, thyroid changes, peri-menopause, menopause…imbalances during any/all of these times can lead to breakouts.
Micro changes can happen more frequently throughout the month tied to our menstrual cycle and/or related to changes in stress, irregular sleep schedules, birth control, hormone replacement therapy, etc.
Men can also experience acne as adults, though a larger percentage of men find that their acne resolves in their early-mid 20s as their testosterone production from adolescence begins to plateau and lessen over the years.
Stress
Stress is often a trigger for acne flare-ups in adults.
Many adults have chronic stress levels. In addition, sometimes we have to manage times of acute stress (finals, work pressures, weddings, funerals, buying/selling a home, illness, etc.).
In response to stress, our bodies produce inflammatory hormones that stimulate the oil glands and hair follicles in the skin. This creates a cycle of inflammation with bacteria on our skin and triggers breakouts.
Hair and skincare products
Ingredients matter if you have acne-prone skin. Some products (especially typical acne skincare products) can leave skin dry, itchy, red, or flakey. When your skin gets irritated, it increases oil production to protect and heal itself, but that also can trigger acne.
Products with pore-clogging ingredients also can trigger acne. If you have acne-prone skin, you should avoid pore-cloggers. You can use our Pore Clogger Checker to see if your products are safe for acne-prone skin.
Medication
Some medications have a side effect of acne for adults. If you suspect that a medicine is triggering your acne or making it worse, continue taking the medicine — but talk with the doctor who prescribed it. Ask if acne is a possible side effect and if you can take a different medication. If you cannot switch medications, you may have to change your skincare products and strategies for a while (The Acne Lab can help).
Undiagnosed medical condition
Sometimes, acne is a sign of an underlying medical condition. This is often true if your acne appears suddenly or in a very particular area.
For our clients with rapid-onset acne symptoms, looking further into underlying medical conditions is often a key part of the solution for acne. Once they get a diagnosis and treatment, their acne often clears.
