Should You Switch to a Stronger Exfoliator?
Switching your exfoliator for a stronger formula is a strategic move we introduce in Month 5 of The Acne Lab Clear Skin Program, but not everyone should or needs to us a stronger formula.
Let's break down the why, who, and when.
First, a Quick Note for New Readers
The advice in this post is specific to clients enrolled in The Acne Lab's Clear Skin Program — our personalized, prescription-free approach to clearing stubborn acne. If you're not currently part of the program, please keep in mind the recommendations below aren't a generic skincare tip. They're a stage-specific adjustment for clients who've already laid the right foundation. Curious about the program? Start here.
Why a Stronger Exfoliator?
Let's clear something up first: stronger isn't necessarily better. This isn't about cranking up the intensity to force the acne to clear up. It's about change.
The change itself is what makes the difference, not the strength. Your skin doesn't need to be blasted. It needs to be kept on its toes.
In Month 4 of our Clear Skin Program, we added an evening exfoliator to your routine to prevent your skin from adapting and slipping back into old habits like sticky skin (retention hyperkeratosis) and cell buildup.
By moving up to an advanced exfoliator this month, we're changing the input again. Same skin fitness principle as before: a runner who always runs the same pace eventually plateaus. To keep progressing, you change the workout. We're changing your skin's workout to keep it adapting in the right direction.
Who Should Switch to an Advanced Exfoliator?
By Month 5, we expect to see real, visible progress in your breakouts. That progress is what tells us your skin is ready for the next step. Here's how to know where you fit:
Switch to the advanced exfoliator if:
- You're on Month 5 of the Clear Skin Program
- You're seeing clear progress with your breakouts
- Your skin is not yet fully clear
- Your skin is not dry, irritated, or compromised
If that's you, you'll switch to the advanced exfoliator in both your morning and evening routines this month.
Stay with your current exfoliator if your skin is clear.
If your skin has gotten clear, congrats! You can stick with your current routine and just move to what we call Maintenance!
If You Have Dry Skin: Get Support
If you're noticing flakiness, redness, dullness, irritation, warmth, or your skin reacting to products it used to tolerate — these are signs your skin barrier needs attention, not stronger exfoliation. Switching to an advanced exfoliator right now would make things worse.
Schedule a Virtual Support Call so we can recalibrate your routine and rebuild your skin's foundation first.
The Bottom Line
Month 5 is about momentum. The right next step depends on what your skin is telling you. When in doubt, schedule a call with our Acne Experts.
