How Supplements Can Help Clear Up Acne

supplements for acne

When trying to get clear skin, sometimes skincare isn't enough, and your body needs acne supplements to provide more systemic support.

Why do supplements play a role? What we eat and the vitamins we take can increase or reduce inflammation, which influences acne patterns.

ALL people with acne will benefit from supplements that minimize or reduce inflammatory reactions. And for some with stubborn acne that just won't seem to get clear, supplements become even MORE important as systemic support to help reduce skin inflammation.

At The Acne Lab, we have always recommended to clients specific supplements that aid in digestion and reduce the body's reaction to stressors, which in turn help reduce skin's reactions to inflammation tied to acne. Below is our list of vitamins we recommend that all of our clients take if they have acne.

Supplements We Recommend to Support Clear Skin

Prebiotics & Probiotics

  • Aid in digestion & reduce gut inflammation.
  • Found in fermented foods: kraut, pickles, & kimchi (without seaweed).
  • As a supplement: 30-50 billion in each capsule.

Omega 3s

  • Are essential (but only come from food, so require supplementation).
  • Reduce systemic inflammatory responses.
  • You need at least 2000mg/daily from EPA & DHA.
  • Use Krill oil, flaxseed oil, fish oil, or "blends" (avoid Omega 6 & 9s).

Zinc Monomethionine

  • Shown to be as effective as antibiotics in reducing inflamed acne.
  • More readily absorbed by the body (& skin) than zinc sulfate or zinc gluconate.
  • Best taken with food.

Vitamins A & D

  • Minimizes oil production in the skin.
  • Great for non-inflamed acne.
  • Note: High doses of Vitamin A is NOT recommended during pregnancy, during lactation, or when trying to conceive.

Clear Skin Support Supplements for Acne Prone Skin

While you can go to the store and buy all these supplements we recommend above, we also offer acne supplement packs that make it easy to take the right supplements every day.

Our supplements packs make it easy to give your body the internal support it needs daily for clear skin. Our Clear Skin Support supplements were created by a licensed functional medicine practitioner who specializes in acne, so you get the right combination of nutrients to support clear skin.

Vitamins That Can Increase Acne

Some vitamins can actually contribute to acne. If you are taking any of the vitamins listed below, you may want to speak to a health care provider about if you can reduce or eliminate these supplements from your routine:

  • Vitamins with iodides
  • Kelp
  • Potassium iodide
  • Biotin
  • B12
